March

In March, we joined Consumer Reports in New York to form a coalition around educating and campaigning efforts to increase the pressure to remove dangerous chemicals from our hair products. Consumer Reports sent 10 of the most popular synthetic braiding hair products on the market to the lab, from brands including Magic Fingers, Sassy Collection, Sensationnel, Shake-N-Go, and others. Carcinogens (chemicals known to cause cancer) were detected in all of them.

Washington State Testimony

Washington State had a pivotal Beauty Justice win in 2025 when they became the first state in the nation to adopt broad restrictions on more than two dozen chemicals used in cosmetic products that can release formaldehyde (found in things like your cosmetics - yes, that formaldehyde). In March, our founder, Hannah McCall, testified in support of the legislative ruling.

April

April brought us to LA for Black Women For Wellness’ Beauty Justice Conference. Our founder was on a panel to discuss safe spaces for Black haircare.

July

In July, we had the honor of partnering with Butter’d and Black Owned with Becks to bring a pop-up installation for founders to unplug at the end of the day during Essence Fest.

September

As supporters of innovation and creating access points for us to build in sustainable ways, Clean Beauty for Black Girls was present for the Yeleen Beauty Makerspace ribbon cutting opening, which is a state-of the-art co-manufacturing facility designed to lower barriers for small businesses in the beauty industry, providing local entrepreneurs with access to manufacturing resources, training, and collaborative opportunities.

State of Black Beauty Justice

State of Black Beauty Justice - a virtual space hosted by Consumer Reports - happened in September as well, where our partners in Beauty Justice shared our wins of the year, as well as our focus and strategy moving forward.

The Conversation

The most important part of this Beauty Justice movement is having the conversation. We’re so much stronger when we make room for each other along the way. That’s what Beyond the Surface on Instagram does. 2025 had us in conversation with the following women who care about the health & wellness of Black women:

Melanated Bar

Meraki Hair Wellness

Herbal Everythings

Mina Adams

Butter’d

We thank you.
