Why Sustainability Matters

Do you think about sustainable packaging when you make a purchase?

If you’re like the majority of Americans, the answer is going to be “hardly”.

But if I’m being honest, that needs to change. ASAP.

Especially when you consider that 70% of packaging from the consumer products goods industry is not recycled. That means most of what we use end up in the landfills.

That’s not okay with me.

And it’s certainly not okay with Mother Earth. Okay?

If we take that one step farther…. Low-income communities are targeted (specifically) with plastic packaging and single-use plastic.

Why does that matter? Because the chemicals that stand to cause us harm when the product is on our shelves and being consumed, are still going to cause health issues when they are soaked into our soil and water.

That’s a full court press on harming our health.

The life cycle of products are a front row seat to why sustainable packaging (and processes) matter. A product’s life cycle is as follows:

  • Raw materials used

  • Manufacturing process

  • Product distribution

  • Disposal

More sustainable practices stand to protect our neighborhoods. That’s just the truth.

We should also be concerned with both our carbon footprint and the carbon footprint of the brands we are supporting.

Think about this: 10% of plastic is recycled. Plastic takes 400 years to break down. That means everything you’ve ever used that is plastic is literally going nowhere any time soon.

Here are a few ways to be more sustainable when it comes to your beauty routine:

  • Think recycle - refill - reuse - compostable

  • Glass containers

  • Donate (or reuse) mascara wands to a wildlife rescue

  • Look for products that use natural ingredients (but also watch for social harm - aka, rainforests & the diverting of land)

  • Watch for brands that use compostable paper & recycled plastic

  • Pay attention to brands that are focused on zero waste

Choose you. Choose safer.
