You Need A Skincare Routine

Come here and sit down. We need to talk about your lack of a skincare routine and why that matters.

If we are keeping it basic, your face is the most sensitive part of your skin and because it’s so rich in melanin, its health is extra important.

The melanin in our skin means that it is also more sensitive and more reactive to the environment, as well as to the products we actually put on it.

In addition, the beauty industry (of course) has historically approached and viewed the testing of products for melanin-rich skin differently. That translates to our products being made with more aggressive ingredients.

*sigh*

Before I jump into the steps you need in both your daytime and nighttime skincare routines, let me just say this…

These steps don’t have to be time consuming - in all honesty my routines on average last a whole 5-10 minutes. Trust me when I say you and your skin deserve (at least) that.

So, let’s start with your daytime/morning skincare routine. You need these steps:

  • Cleanse - to remove dirt, sweat & oil. Think of this step as the one that removes any buildup - like the bacteria and dead skin cells threatening to clog your pores

  • Tone - in order to go a step deeper and remove the dirt that may be stuck in your pores and to give you skin a re-balancing

  • Serum - addresses inflammation and boosts your skin’s hydration

  • Moisturize - to protect your skin’s barrier

  • Sunscreen - Girl. UV doesn’t play, so neither will you. Okay?!

Nighttime is similar, just with a slightly different focus. Take care of yourself by:

  • Remove your makeup - I’m not explaining ‘why’ to you. You know better.

  • Cleanse - to get rid of any bacteria that built up over the course of the day

  • Tone - removes impurities and reduces your pore size

  • Serum - to address any issues your skin may be dealing with

  • Moisturize - in order to give your skin a barrier while it repairs overnight

A few tips…

When applying products, a good rule of thumb to remember is use them in order of thinnest to thickest if you’re unsure of what goes on when.

Think of serum as putting nutrients back into your skin. Not much different than eating a vegetable to let your body know you love it.

Speaking of nutrients, the health of the skin on your face has a lot to do with what you’re putting in it, too. So eat your fruits and vegetables - in particular your carrots & sweet potatoes. Add some turmeric to your dishes - for its anti-inflammatory properties. And please drink your water.

Now. Go get your skincare on.

Safely, of course.
