Meet Mischo Beauty

Have you ever taken a good look at what is in your nail polish?

Maybe I’m the only one, but this was a personal care product that I completely overlooked as something that could potentially cause me harm.
As I began to pay attention to everything else I was putting on my body, I realized it was time to dive into nail polish.

I’m someone who paints their nails one to two times a week and it’s irresponsible of me to not know what I was exposing myself to.

Have you heard of diphenyl phosphate? If not, I get it. But you will want to remember it.

It’s an ingredient in most nail polish lacquers and it is known to disrupt hormones in people.

Even the “toxic-free” polishes contain an ingredient called toxin toluene, which has been suspected of causing birth defects.

Here is a good article on the risks:

So I went on a search for nail polish that was not only way less harmful, but that still gave me the fierce colors and quality I had become accustomed to.

That brought me to this article and to Mischo Beauty.

“Mischo Beauty assures that its nail polish formulation has always been 10 FREE. Which means it contains no Formaldehyde, no Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), no Toluene, no Formaldehyde Resin, no Camphor, no Ethyl Tosylamide, no Xylene, no Triphenyl Phosphate, no tert-butyl hydroperoxide, and no parabens - all ingredients that have been known to contribute to cancer, birth defects, reproductive issues, nausea, light-headedness, headaches and more.

Mischo Beauty nail lacquers are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, gluten-free and void of artificial fragrances.”

I knew immediately this brand knew what it was talking about. I also felt the vibe & energy of it being created by a black woman.

I had to know about the powerhouse behind the brand.

So here we are talking to Kitiya Mischo King, founder of Mischo Beauty.

Can you tell me a bit about you & your company?

Mischo Beauty actually started as a beauty blog back in 2007, to provide an honest, fact-based perspective on all things beauty.  I’m a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, manicurist and makeup artist with professional training and experience from Vidal Sassoon, Aveda, and Elizabeth Arden’s Red Door Spa. I also have a degree in Chemistry from Spelman College.  It’s always been a dream of mine to combine my love of science and passion for beauty.

That dream came true when during my  pregnancy I had the hardest time finding non-toxic and fashion-forward nail polish. I actually didn’t polish my nails during the first six months of my pregnancy.  It was during that time that I decided I would launch Mischo Beauty Nail Lacquer, a 10 FREE, non-toxic, cruelty-free nail lacquer collection. Mischo Beauty – the blog, then became Mischo Beauty – a luxury, eco-conscious cosmetics brand in 2013!

When did you first know you wanted to pursue creating a “clean” product? Why is that important to you?

While pregnant with my son, I was determined to find a nail formula that was as chic as it was healthy. But six long months later, my search left me less than impressed and what I found was toxic bland colors that chipped and cracked, and chunky lacquers that didn’t go on smoothly. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and create what I was looking for!

Before I became pregnant, I did not pay attention at all (to the toxins in nail polish).  I wasn’t reading the labels.

What is your favorite part of the creation process?

Selecting the colors for each season!

Define success. What is your method for achieving that success?

Doing what you love, and loving what you do.  I try my best to stay focused and work hard.

Have you experienced failure?

Failure for me is a lesson.  It's another opportunity to get it right.  So yes, I've learned many lessons on this journey - and I'm still learning.  It's been a long road filled with ups and downs - highs and lows, but thankfully the highs outweigh the lows!

What inspires and motivates you?

Having this amazing opportunity and platform that I can use to inspire other women to follow their dreams!

What projects are you currently working on?

Expansion to full color cosmetics, skincare and haircare!

I believe clean beauty is really one of those things in which we really don’t know what we don’t know. And it’s not until we know better that we can do better.

It’s going to take education, innovation, and support for us to continue in this movement of protecting our sisters without sacrificing the standard of beauty products we have come to love.

I’m inspired by the story behind Mischo Beauty & I hope you are too. I can’t wait for what’s to come!
